Michael Imaginary Friend :: short story

Michael Fritz was a desolate kid. His folks passed on in an awful fender bender when he was two, so Michael was sent to live with his Aunt and Uncle. Michael was known as a shut in, and never would he go play with kids his own age. He was content with within his home and that is the place he remained. While Michel’s Aunt and Uncle were grinding away his caretaker, Kendra, would watch after him and take him to the recreation center. On a day that appeared to be as typical as the rest something exceptionally irregular occurred. Michael was taken to the recreation center, and like his standard everyday practice; he went off and played without anyone else. A couple of hours after the fact Michael went to Kendra, and revealed to her he was all set. She concurred and they began to the vehicle. â€Å"Miss Kendra, would i be able to bring a companion home with me,† expressed Michael. Kendra answered, â€Å"I can’t see a motivation behind why not.† Kendra searched for Michael’s companion, yet she didn't see him anyplace. â€Å"He’s right here,† expressed Michael, â€Å"he is exceptionally eager to get back home with us.† It was at that point that Kendra understood that Michael had a fanciful companion. She approved of the thought and thought the idea of a fanciful companion was entirely typical. â€Å"Oh, presently I see your companion. What is his name?† the babysitter said. â€Å"His name is Jonny, and he is one year more established than me.† The entire vehicle ride home Michael was conversing with his fanciful companion. Kendra wouldn't fret; she was intensely glad to realize that Michael made some sort of companion. When Michael’s auntie returned home that night the Kendra pulled her to the side and enlightened her regarding Jonny. Many would argue that what truly makes you unique is the characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that make up your personality. While there is no single agreed upon definition of personality, it is often thought of as something that arises from within the individual and remains fairly consistent throughout life. It encompasses all of the thoughts, behavior patterns, and social attitudes that impact how we view ourselves and what we believe about others and the world around us. Understanding personality allows psychologists to predict how people will respond to certain situations and the sorts of things they prefer and value. In order to understand how researchers study personality psychology, it is important to start by learning more about some of the most influential personality theories. Theories A number of different theories have emerged to explain various aspects of personality. Some theories focus on explaining how personality develops, while others are concerned with individual differences in personality. Personality Is Often Described in Terms of Traits The trait theories of personality are centered on the idea that personality is made up of a number of different broad traits or dispositions. Various theories have been proposed over the years to attempt to identify exactly which attributes serve as key components in personality and to determine the total number of personality traits. Psychologist Gordon Allport was one of the first to describe personality in terms of individual traits. In his dispositional perspective, he suggested that there are different kinds of traits. Common traits are those that are shared by many people within a particular culture. Central traits are those that make up an individuals personality. Cardinal traits are those that are so dominant that a person becomes primarily known for those characteristics. Mother Teresa, for example, was so well-known for her charitable work that her name became almost synonymous to service to those in need. While Allport had suggested that there were as many as 4,000 individual traits, the psychologist Raymond Cattell proposed that there were 16. He also believed that these traits exist on a continuum and that all people possess each trait in varying degrees. Later, psychologist Hans Eysenck narrowed this list of traits even further and suggested that there were just three: extroversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism. The Big Five theory is perhaps the most popular and widely accepted trait theory of personality today. This theory proposes that personality is made up of five broad personality dimensions: extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness. Each trait exists as a broad continuum, and each individuals personality lies somewhere on that spectrum for each trait. For example, you might be high in extroversion, conscientiousness, and agreeableness while being somewhere in the middle of the continuum for the traits of openness and neuroticism. Some Theories Look at How Personality Develops and Changes Through Life Freuds theory of psychosexual development is one of the best-known personality theories, but also one of the most controversial. According to Freud, children progress through a series of stages of personality development. At each stage, libidinal energy, or the force that drives all human behaviors, becomes focused on specific erogenous zones. Successful completion of each stage results in moving on to the next phase of development, but failure at any particular stage can lead to fixations that can impact adult personality. Psychologist named Erik Erikson described a series of eight psychosocial stages that people go through during life. Each stage plays a significant role in the development of personality and psychological skills. During each stage, the individual faces a developmental crisis that serves as a turning point in development. Erikson was more interested in how social interactions influenced the development of personality and was primarily concerned with the development of what he called ego identity. Successfully completing the stages leads to the development of a healthy personality. While Freuds theory suggested that personality is primarily formed and set in stone at a very early age, Erikson believed that personality continues to develop and grow throughout life. How Personality Is Tested In order to study and measure personality, psychologists have developed a number of different personality tests, assessments, and inventories. Many of these tests are widely used in a variety of settings. For example, the famous Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is frequently used as a pre-employment screening assessment. Other assessments may be used to help people learn more about different aspects of their personalities or as screening and evaluation tools when diagnosing different types of personality disorders. The chances are that you have encountered a wide variety of personality tests in different forms online. Many of these tests purport to reveal the real you, while others are clearly just for entertainment. For example, you might come across online quizzes that identify whether you have an extroverted or introverted personality. Gaining a better understanding of yourself can sometimes help you become more aware of why you work so well with others or why you sometimes feel like you just need a little alone time. The key is to remember that any assessment that you take online should probably be taken with a grain of salt. These informal tools can be fun and can even sometimes offer insight into your preferences and characteristics, but only personality tests administered by trained and qualified professionals should be used for any sort of formal assessment or diagnosis. Personality Disorders Personality psychologists not only study how personality develops, but they are also interested in various problems that may arise. A number of different personality disorders have been identified that can have a serious impact on an individuals life and functioning. The National Institute of Mental Health reports that approximately 9.1% of the adult U.S. population experiences symptoms of at least one personality disorder each year. So, what exactly is a personality disorder? These disorders are characterized as chronic and pervasive mental disorders that impact thoughts, behaviors, and interpersonal functioning. The DSM-5 currently lists 10 different personality disorders. These include antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. Being diagnosed with a personality disorder can often be quite distressing, but it is important to remember that help is available. By working with mental health professionals, you can find ways of recognizing the difficulties that these disorders can cause in your life and explore new coping strategies. It is OK to feel frightened and concerned about what the future may hold, but the important thing to remember is that you do not have to face it alone. There are people who are trained, skilled, and ready to help you take the next steps in your treatment. How the McCormick Reaper Revolutionized Farming

Cyrus McCormick, a blacksmith in Virginia, developed the first practical mechanical reaper to harvest grain in 1831 when he was only 22 years old. His machine, at first a local curiosity, proved to be enormously important. In the decades following McCormicks first attempts to bring mechanical aid to farm work, his invention would revolutionize farming in the United States and around the world. Early Experiments McCormicks father had earlier tried to invent a mechanical device for harvesting but gave up on it. But in the summer of 1831 the son took up the job and labored for about six weeks in the family blacksmith shop.   Confident he had worked out the tricky mechanics of the device, McCormick demonstrated it at a local gathering place, Steeles Tavern. The machine had some innovative features that would make it possible for a farmer to harvest grain faster than could ever be done by hand. As the demonstration was later described, local farmers were at first puzzled by the peculiar contraption that looked like a sled with some machinery on top of it. There was a cutting blade and spinning parts which would hold grain heads while the stalks were being cut. As McCormick began the demonstration, the machine was pulled through a wheat field behind a horse. The machinery began to move, and it was suddenly apparent that the horse pulling the device was doing all the physical work. McCormick only had to walk beside the machine and rake the wheat stalks into piles which could be bound as usual. The machine worked perfectly and McCormick was able to use it that year in the fall harvest. Business Success McCormick produced more of the machines, and at first, he only sold them to local farmers. But as word of the machines amazing functionality spread, he began selling more. He ultimately started a factory in Chicago. The McCormick Reaper revolutionized agriculture, making it possible to harvest large areas of grain much faster than could have been done by men wielding scythes. Because farmers could harvest more, they could plant more. So McCormicks invention of the reaper made the possibility of food shortages, or even famine, less likely. It was said that before McCormicks machinery changed farming forever, families would have to struggle to cut enough grain during the fall to last them until the next harvest. One farmer, highly skilled at swinging at scythe, might only be able to harvest two acres of grain in a day. With a reaper, one man with a horse could harvest large fields in a day. It was thus possible to have much larger farms, with hundreds or even thousands of acres. The earliest horse-drawn reapers made by McCormick cut the grain, which fell onto a platform so it could be raked up by a man walking alongside the machine. Later models consistently added practical features, and McCormicks farm machinery business grew steadily. By the end of the 19th century, McCormick reapers did not just cut wheat, they could also thresh it and put it into sacks, ready for storage or shipment. At the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, McCormick exhibited his latest model. The American machine was the source of much curiosity. McCormicks reaper, during a competition held at an English farm in July 1851, outperformed a British-made reaper. When the McCormick reaper was returned to the Crystal Palace, the site of the Great Exhibition, word had spread. In the crowds attending the exhibition, the machine from America became a must-see attraction. In the 1850s McCormicks business grew as Chicago became the center of the railroads in the Midwest, and his machinery could be shipped to all parts of the country. The spread of the reapers meant that American grain production also increased. It has been noted that McCormicks farming machines may have had an impact on the Civil War, as they were more common in the North. And that meant farmhands going off to war had less impact on grain production. In the South, where hand tools were more common, the loss of farm hands to the military had much more impact. In the years following the Civil War the company founded by McCormick continued to grow. When workers at McCormicks factory struck in 1886, events surrounding the strike led to the Haymarket Riot, a watershed event in American labor history.

The hermit in the book is considered to be evil by everyone in Wearied. But when Elli discovers the Hermits den she finds old documents and photo’s of his family. If he was so evil why would he keep them. Personally I think that he was putting his family out of their misery by shooting them, and he stayed away from everyone because he could not stand being judged. My third and final point is when Elli blows up the lawn mower. After doing so she starts to question herself throughout the book and cannot make clear decisions because of this. She keeps asking herself the question ‘ am an evil person. Her friend tell her that she had to do it or her friends may have been killed and that makes her wonder ‘is evil a human invention. If this was the animal kingdom and she was a lioness and a hyena was trying to eat her cubs there is no doubt that the lioness would fight the hyena. That again would not be evil in reality, in reality that would be nature. In conclusion I think that evil is a human invention and that Elli try’s to fight this fact and also tries to embrace it. This becomes more bold when she blows up the lawn mower, Discovers the Hermit is real and when the dragonfly eats the mosquito. My Reasons for Reading this Book: I saw this movie about a year ago and I really liked it, so when I found this in the library I just had to read it. I wanted to know if there is a lot difference between the book and the movie, and I can’t wait to read the rest of these books. There are six others that continues this story. The reason I like this type of movie/book is because I like stories that have to do with the end of the world. Whether it is war, zombies taking over the world or a disease spreading. I think it has to do with my sick need of wanting to prepare for the end of the world, when ever that may come. The main character is the 17-year-old Ellie Linton. She lives in a town called Wirrawee, Australia. Ellie plans to take a break from work on her parents farm and set out on one last adventure before summer vacation is over, a camping trip to the legendary oasis that is rumored to be located in the middle of the stone desert that surrounds the village, and that the locals call â€Å"Hell†. The six friends that goes with her on the trip are Robyn, Homer, Fiona, Corrie, Kevin and Lee. My Reading Log: Finishing Remarks I have now finished the book and I loved it! The story is so good! I can not wait to find out what happens next. The language is also great, very modern. I definitely want to find out more and I am curious about what will happen in the next book.
